Elephant Kitchen Thai

We found ourselves walking among the backstreets near Taipei City Hall the other night, and stumbled into Elephant Kitchen Thai. Often places around this area are pricey, so when we saw the price we were skeptical. But…

Inside Elephant Kitchen Thai is spacious and plenty of light. It looked clean – so far, so good.

The menu is vast, but in English

Green Papaya Salad

涼拌青木瓜

$179

I always like ordering this in Thai restaurants. Although it may look a bit insipid in colour, the flavours usually deliver. You’re to expect salty, sour, spicy, crunchy, sweet, nutty flavours in every mouthful. It’s a right old mix in the mouth.

Pork Satay skewers

沙嗲豬

$190

Satay for days. If we come back Elephant Kitchen Thai, I am ordering two portions of this. Succulent pork, good flavours on the skewers even without the dips. However, that spicy dip hits the money, too.

Crispy fried chicken

椒麻雞

$200

Yessss. If you’re into chicken and spicy things then this is a must. Expect spice in every mouthful, with delicious crispy chicken following it. Not at all greasy, very nicely flavoured and fresh tasting. You can’t go wrong ordering this at Elephant Kitchen Thai.

Shrimp cake

月亮蝦餅

$270

Ever seen a shrimp cake this thick?

Good flavours in this shrimp cake. It’s nice and juicy inside, and paired with the sweet sauce – winning.

You should get some rice, to settle the salty, sour and spicy flavours throughout the meal. But, you must absolutely try this secret tip I am about to give you. Order the satay and enjoy it for what it is, BUT, make sure you douse some of that peanutty curry onto your rice – you’re welcome in advance.

Coconut cream dessert

 摩摩喳喳

$60

Something sweet to finish on. Some lychee involved here, as well as a bunch of traditionally Thai dessert additions. The coconut cream is lovely, and the sago underneath is nice for a change, too.
