I am not much a fan of eating spaghetti outside of where I know is a legit Italian space. But, Chef Brunch surprised me.
On the 2nd floor of ShiDong Market in Tianmu, Chef Brunch is a Taiwanese-Italian stand/stall/space.
The menu is kind of vast here, which worried me a bit. I prefer smaller menus focusing on dishes more.
Spaghetti with Neapolitan sauce and mozzarella
拿波里肉醬馬茲瑞拉起司 ná bō lǐ ròu jiàng mǎ zī ruì lā qǐ sī
$150
A tasty tomato and meat sauce with plenty of garlic and cheese. The spaghetti was cooked really nicely, and the egg made everything just that little bit more luxurious. This was a solid and surprisingly tasty dish.
*obligatory pasta pull*
Spicy clam risotto
風乾辣茄蛤蠣燉飯 fēng gān là jiā há lì dùn fàn
$190
My favourite risotto is at the Mandarin Oriental Bencotto restaurant, but this is a very very good effort. It was over-spiced, though, which made me sweat whilst eating it. I think the cook was too heavy-handed with the pepper and the chilli powder. It was tasty enough, but hold off on a bit of the powder, and you’d be on to a winner.
The rice is cooked really nicely, and there are plenty clams to bring a freshness to the dish.
Spicy pan-fried chicken steak
惡魔香煎雞腿排 È mó xiāng jiān jī tuǐ pái
$100
Spicy was the word, here. In fact, it says 惡魔 in the Chinese name for this dish, translating to ‘Devil’. That probably says all you need to know. But, whilst it is spicy, the spice is a fragrant one. It isn’t a dull spice for spice sake, it’s actually well flavoured.
