Taipei Bakery – Feed The Wife 胖死我太太: Perfect Pastries and Scintillating Cinnamon Rolls

Located in a secluded spot of Taipei near the lush Taipei Botanical Gardens, Feed the Wife is a charming bakery that has quickly become a favourite among locals and travellers. Known for its quality and taste, this bakery specializes in various artisanal pastries and breads that will be sure to get you going back for more.

One of the standout offerings at Feed the Wife is their sourdough bread. Baked to perfection, the sourdough boasts a crisp, golden crust and a chewy, flavorful centre. The natural fermentation process gives it a distinctive tang that pairs wonderfully with various spreads and toppings (if you scroll to the bottom, you can see what I like to pair it with). This noteworthy sourdough bread in Taipei is not just bread; it is an experience. It captures the essence of traditional baking methods combined with a modern twist and must be eaten to be appreciated.

Equally noteworthy are their cinnamon rolls, which have garnered a loyal following. These rolls are a harmonious blend of soft, fluffy dough, swirled with a generous cinnamon and sugar filling, and topped with a rich glaze. The result is a sweet, aromatic roll that is both indulgent and comforting. Due to their popularity, I recommend you order these cinnamon rolls in advance to ensure you get one. Each batch is freshly made, and they are highly coveted!

Feed the Wife’s commitment to quality and attention to detail makes it a must-visit destination for anyone looking for delicious baked goods in Taipei. Whether enjoying a stroll through the nearby botanical gardens or seeking out the best local bakeries, travellers will find themselves returning to Feed the Wife for their exceptional sourdough bread and irresistible cinnamon rolls.

Arriving outside you will be greeted by beautiful wood, browns, and lots of lights. It’s set inside an apartment block, but lifts the whole neighbourhood up a notch or two.

They may regularly adjust their menu, but it you rock up at around 12:30 you will be good to go with pretty much everything. However, pay attention to my note about the cinnamon rolls below, as there’s something you really have to know about them before turning up…

The Menu at Feed the Wife Bakery

Pretzels, muffins, sourdough, focaccia, croissant, pain au chocolate, cookies. It's everything you have been waiting for.

    What do we regularly order?

Our regular order at Feed the Wife are as follows:

    • Cinnamon Roll
    • Pain au Chocolate
    • Pistachio Croissant
    • Sourdough
    • Egg Tart

Their daily offerings change regularly, but some of the most popular choices remain. You're definitely going to want to get cinnamon rolls!

    Cinnamon Roll

The bakery opens at 12:30 most days, and if you're coming here especially for this you must get get here when it opens. They don't come out of the oven until around 2pm, but if you don't order it when it opens then it's highly unlikely that you'll be able to grab one if you turn up at 2pm

    But how does it taste?

I am no stranger to cinnamon rolls, and I really enjoy these ones. They are definitely the bready type of cinnamon roll, and they are packed full of cinnamon flavour. They are fragrant, they are perfectly balanced, and they are one of my favourites in Taipei. While they look a little dry, I can assure you that they are not. Especially with that yummy frosting on top doing what it does best.

Top 5 Must-try Cinnamon Rolls in Taipei

    Pain au Chocolat

A Pain au Chocolat may just be one of my favourite things to eat. I love the flakey pastry and how it gives way to a buttery delicate and airy center with just the right amount of bitter dark chocolate on the inside. These ones are great, and right up there with some of the better ones in Taipei. Well worth coming for!

    Almond Croissant

Now you may scoff all you want, but I need a croissant with a flat white. I need to dunk it right on in there and indulge. This almond croissant is heavy with almonds both on the outside and on the inside. It's fragrant, it's flakey, and it's pretty good.

    Pistachio Croissant

I love a croissant. I love pistachio flavoured things. I love pistachio croissants, but I didn't even know that they existed before I came to Feed the Wife! Did you?

A pistachio cream is piped into these croissants after they have cooked and cooled down, which is different to the way an almond croissant is made. This allows the cream to more evenly fill the croissant and not feel too much like the filling has all settled at the bottom into a hard layer.

The pistachio flavour is beautifully light and delicate, allowing lots of pistachio flavour to come through. The croissant itself is also pretty good, too!

    Egg Tart

feed the wife bakery egg tart

This was the last slice of egg tart, and seeing it sitting all lonely on the counter we felt obliged to get it. Having never had a bad thing from this place, it only stood to be a wonderful new option gained. And it was.

A tasty tart casing holds in this light egg and vanilla filling, with a naturally textured skin that has formed on the top of the tart. I like the vanilla and egg fragrance of this tart, and I was surprised at just how light it was.

    Sourdough Bread

The top left is a potato and broccoli sourdough, and the others are all the salami sourdough. The potato and broccoli sourdough is much more dense (owing to the potato, I guess), but has a lovely fragrant broccoli flavour that comes through with a chewy potato flavour to the dough. It's good, but I think I prefer the salami sourdough.

The salami sourdough bangs with flavour, with a whole bunch of salami flecks throughout the bread. The airy nature of the bread allows for that quintessential sourdough smell and texture to come out. Of course, the best way to have sourdough is with beautifully runny scrambled eggs and sundried tomatoes - winner!

    Focaccia

    feed the wife bakery focaccia

There are usually 2-3 focaccia offerings most days, and this time I went for the tomato and parmesan flavoured one. It was wonderfully fragrant with the tomato flavour coming through nicely, and the focaccia itself was stunningly light, while still having plenty of crispy texture on the top and a pillow-light texture on the inside. This is a great light lunch or snack any day of the week!

    feed the wife bakery takeout

Every time I go to Feed the Wife bakery, I come out with a bag filled with delicious goodies to take home or to share with friends or family. I can't recommend this place enough. The owners speak excellent English, and I've never had a bad bite of anything!

    The Bottom Line

    Is it worth it? Definitely.

What is the best dish? The Cinnamon Roll is top quality.

Are there other places like this? There are plenty of bakeries in Taipei. My other picks would be Purebread for their sourdough, The Antipodean for their almond croissant, and check out this link for all of my cinnamon roll recommendations in Taipei.
