3 Fast Tips on How to Order in Taipei Restaurants like a definitive pro!
The Menu at Fonda Mexico
Mexican food in Taipei can be a little hit-and-miss, but I would argue that this menu here at Fonda Mexico is simple enough for them to concentrate on just a few dishes and variations of them. I was also happy to see that tacos are served every day of the week, not just on a Tuesday.
What We Ordered
Tacos
It felt rude to come to Fonda Mexicao and not indulge in their tacos. We had to get enough for a full spread, so we chose to get 4 of the 5 available options. What delighted me when they arrived were the toppings, the slice of lemon on the side, and that delightfully spicy sauce nestled in the centre of the plate.
I've had a few taco options around Taipei and felt somewhat underwhelmed by them. I am not a regular taco eater, nor would I ever claim to hold any particular weight on a conversation devoted to the best Tacos in Taipei. But what I can say is what I expect from a taco:
- The taco itself shouldn't be cold.
- The filling shouldn't be cold.
- There should be a simple garnish on top that doesn't dominate the taco or the filling.
- The filling should be proportionate to the taco, allowing for filling in every bite.
I don't know whether they are personal preferences, or whether they are expectations from everyone of their tacos, but that's where I stand. Did I get it right?
Anyway, to the tacos!
- Campechano - a mix of chorizo and beef, this went down a treat. The beef was lightly seasoned but still brought that strong beef flavour that just seemed to mix nicely with the lightly spiced chorizo. It may look dry but looks can be deceiving. It's juicy! That coriander and onion mix on top allows for a cut through the heavier flavours, and I am here for all of it.
- Carnitas - I love shredded/pulled pork. There's something in the stringiness of the texture that I enjoy. This wasn't dry in any way but benefited from a bit of that spicy sauce drizzled over the top to let those pork flavours pop.
- Chorizo - Chorizo is one of my favourite things, so I was excited to get a pure chorizo taco. There's plenty of paprika flavour on this, which is elevated to new levels with a squeeze of lemon and a drizzle of that spicy sauce.
- Suadero - The beef in these tacos was plentiful and seasoned really nicely. It is a little on the heavier side for flavour, so it definitely benefits from the coriander and onion, and we even gave this both a spritz of that lemon and a drizzle of spicy sauce. All complimented perfectly and was enjoyed happily.
Huevos Divorciados
Not content with 4 tacos, we had to try something else on the menu, and I was intrigued with the way this sounded - Two sunny-side-up eggs served on tortillas each with red and green sauce.
I admit it's not the most beautiful display of food ever, but as I said above ^ don't let looks fool you. This was a tasty plate of food.
It's nice to see that Mexican food in Taipei is not just about tacos, burritos, and nachos. Here, the Huevos Divorciados came through with bags of flavour, surprising me with each bite.
I went for the green sauce first, and it was pretty good. It's the same spicy sauce as the one that accompanied the tacos, but that's a good thing as the sauce is delicious and I only ever wanted more of it, if anything. You have some flavoured rice on the bottom, topped with a tortilla, then a red bean paste, a sunny-side-up egg, and finally a smattering of that sauce.
Each mouthful has those layers running through it. Both sauces were good, and both had a mild spice to them. I left with a happy smile on my face. Next time I want to get the enchiladas!
The Bottom Line
Is it worth it? Fonda Mexico is most certainly worth it. They are the tastiest tacos I have had in Taipei so far, and the inside of the restaurant itself has a charming family-run feel to it.
What is the best dish? The best taco that we tried was probably the chorizo. But, honestly, I will order all of them again.
Are there other places like this? There are a fair few Mexican restaurants in Taipei, but there are still so many that I have yet to try. I highly recommend El Sabroso (In Gongguan) for their burrito, but I have also been to Tacos N Taps, Eddies Cantina, and the Taco Night at Sheep + Pony.
