3 Fast Tips on How to Order in Taipei Restaurants like a definitive pro!

The Menu at Heritage Bakery and Cafe

While we didn't order any savoury food while here, the servers were busy delivering them to many tables in the packed-out cafe - surely a mark of quality?

When you walk in and before you even get to see this menu, you'll be faced with the dessert display counter on the ground floor. I challenge you to make it past without ordering a sweet treat (diabetics are excused from this challenge). All of the desserts look so good, and the ones that we tried are simply a snapshot of what Heritage has.

    Matcha Boston Pie

Heritage Bakery and Cafe Matcha Boston Pie

This looked so good at the dessert counter that we had to indulge. When I order a Boston pie, I want a fluffy and light cake, a similarly fluffy and light cream on top, and lots of light cream sandwiched within. Heritage Bakery may have just cemented themselves at the top of my list (yes, there's a list) of Boston pies at a Taipei cafe. Flavourful yet light. Creamy yet clean. Sweet yet well-balanced. I don't have anything bad to say.

The matcha flavour sings through with every mouthful, and it's mixed in beautifully with the cream. This is a solid order and would go down nicely with a cup of their Earl Grey tea.

    Choc Chip Cookie

Heritage Bakery and Cafe chocolate chip cookie

Choc Chip Cookies are quintessential American comfort food. Whether it's here as a chewy cookie, as a crispy cookie with some milk, or in some delicious Ben and Jerry's ice cream. There's no escaping the sweet, buttery, chocolatey goodness of a choc chip cookie. But, are they always worth the hype?

In my opinion, a great choc chip cookie should be lightly crispy on the outside, chewy on the inside, balanced nicely with butter-chocolate flavour, and there should be crunchy chunks of chocolate inside to add a texture variation. But at this Taipei bakery, were they any good?

This choc chip cookie was very good indeed. While it wasn't particularly crunchy on the outside, it was chewy and packed full of well-balanced flavours. I appreciated the rough-and-ready shape it had, and I would come back here again for more. For a bakery in Taipei that isn't necessarily known for its choc chip cookies, Heritage Bakery and Cafe sure do a damn good one!

    Cinnamon Roll

When you click through Facebook, Instagram, Reddit, or anywhere else to get your news on Eating in Taipei forums, you'll probably have stumbled across many people talking about the best cinnamon roll in Taipei, and where they think it is. I've tried many cinnamon rolls here in Taipei, and there are so many different variations that it's difficult to pin down my favourite. Or is it? Check below for my top recommendations!

Top 5 Must-try Cinnamon Rolls in Taipei

Heritage Bakery and Cafe, I can safely say, does one of the best cinnamon rolls that I have had in Taipei up to this point. And while they aren't on the top 5 list above ^, they soon will be!

The fragrant cinnamon flavour, the sweet brown sugar, the tangy cream cheese drizzled frosting on top, the chewy yet fluffy texture. All of it was right there and balanced superbly. Served slightly warm, a cinnamon roll can be a thing of wonder. Washed down with a great cup of coffee, this was a real pleasure to eat.

    Other Cakes

It felt rude to leave this post without featuring some of the other cakes that looked delicious from the ground floor cake counter as you walked in. In particular, my eyes were drawn to that beautiful fig-adorned cheesecake. I'll be getting that next time if they have it. I hope it wasn't a seasonal special!

    The Bottom Line

Is it worth it? As far as Taipei Main Stations cafe's go, I would say that Heritage Bakery and Cafe is pretty hard to beat. Go here, get some work done, and enjoy both a coffee and a cinnamon roll as your reward. You should probably take out a choc chip cookie, too, just to be sure.

What is the best dish? The cinnamon roll was the winner here.
