At what is less than a 10 min walk away from Beimen MRT station, or a 15 min walk from Daqiaotou MRT station, you’ll walk in to a modestly sized restaurant in Pizza Has a Face.

Upon walking in, you’ll be shown to a table (no reservations here, folks!), and you’ll be given a menu. The menu is bilingual, so no translations needed here this time. What strikes you when you walk in is the relaxed atmosphere, with more often than not some old-school Hip-Hop playing in the background, and a full show of making the pizzas by the chefs working in the open kitchen.

There are some window benches to the front, some booths in the back, and in the far back there are a few more tables hidden away, too. At a guess the max occupancy would be between 20-30, so when busy you may well have to wait for a table.

The Menu at Pizza Has a Face

    pizza has a face 3

This blackboard menu has all the important bits on, but I think that the most important aspect where this one differs from the paper menu is the ‘Special Limited’ section bottom right. This changes regularly, so don’t be surprised to see if the 2 limited specials you see in this picture aren’t available when you go, but be excited by the possibilities of what could be there!

Red, white, green, and special limited pizza are what await you here. Is it a coincidence that red, white and green are the colours of the Italian flag? I think not…

What strikes me on the menu is just how reasonably priced each pizza seems to be. I mean, when you go to some of the classic chain stores such as Dominos, Napoli, Pizza Hut etc, you’ll find that their prices aren’t too dissimilar from here. But trust me when I say that they are inferior in every single way. And if you call that ‘pizza‘, then this place right here is going to blow your mind.

Not only are the pizzas here incredible, but the beer is next level, too! They stock beers from local breweries such as Ugly Half, but they also stock some incredible beers from Alesmith (see below), Alchemist, and Samuel Smiths, too, which I smiled at. Samuel Smiths has a bit of a reputation in the UK as being a cheaper beer that doesn’t really offer much. Their labels are fun and quirky, but that’s about all, in my opinion.

I would strongly recommend getting your lips around a cold tin of Alesmith Brewing Company Sunshine Bliss Hazy IPA. Coming out of California, this beer fires on all cylinders.

    Brooklyn

I have been here around 5 times now, and I have ordered Brooklyn every time. Tomato base, mozzarella, parmesan, and basil. No pig blood cake with soup dumplings here, folks. No, not at all. Just simply delicious ingredients arranged together expertly.

The mozzarella is packed full of fresh creamy flavour that balances out the salty parmesan really nicely, and the basil adds a wonderful fragrance to the rich tomato base. I cannot get enough of this.

Now lets talk crust. Everyone knows that pizza is judged just as much on the crust as it is the toppings. Whilst it may to a certain extent be a little subjective, I think most can agree that a crust must be tasty and actually add something to the pizza. It shouldn’t just be needless, greasy stodginess that is simply there to fill you up.

In Dadaocheng at Pizza Has a Face, you’re getting a crispy, crunchy, tasty, airy, and overall excellently thin crust. It’s always cooked perfectly to allow the base to remain thin, crispy, and not soggy in any way. It’s one of the nicest crusts that I have had.

The bubbly singed edges of the base bring a smoky flavour to each slice of this excellent creation. I will get this every time I return here, as it is simply that good.

    Django

Spicy, rich, salty, and absolutely decadent. The Django is quite the creation. Washed down with that Alesmith Hazy IPA is how you should enjoy it, without question.

A rich tomato base, mozzarella, dill sausage, jalapeno, mushrooms, rosemary, and parmesan are the toppings on the Django.

The dill sausage is packed full of flavour that pops in your mouth with rich and salty sausage dill flavour really nicely. The jalapeno give a nice kick with the rosemary adding some really nice fragrance to each mouthful.

One slight issue for me is the criss-crossed way that Django is cut. I don’t really understand why it’s cut this way, and it frustrates me, as I feel like I have to use a fork when it comes to some of the smaller squares in the middle that don’t have a crust with which to hold. Never use a fork to eat a pizza. Get in there with your hands. Fold it if you need to. But definitely use your hands!

The thing is, though, that even with the way it is cut, I will still gladly go out of my way to come here and eat Django again, as it’s really delicious.

    Eating in Taipei, always.

    Popeye

pizza has a face breakfast pizza

Popeye is a white sauce based pizza that has mozzarella, provolone, bacon, spinach, egg, and parmesan on top. The crunchy bacon mixed with that soft cooked egg in the center make this feel almost like a breakfast pizza. The copious amounts of mozzarella an the and parmesan add that great cheesy deliciousness that we all love, and the spinach give a cursory nod to health.

That soft cooked egg in the middle oozes with yolky goodness when you pick up a slice, which creates its own little dipping ‘sauce’ for when you’re down to just the crust, too. Yum!

    Sollozzo (Spicy)

    pizza has a face 7

A rich tomato base, mozzarella, salami, red onion, basil, and parmesan are the toppings on the Sollozzo. The rich, salty, spicy salami is so plentiful that each and every bite, not to mention each slice, is packed with that spiciness that you’ve come for. The basil adds a nice fragrance to the spice, and the mozzarella with the parmesan add that extra level with depth of flavour.

Something to marvel at, for sure. The Sollozzo is something quite special. It’s quite salty, but when you pair it with one of the bottled, canned, or draught beers you cannot go far wrong. The Ugly Half beers are worth checking out, and there’s often a really good Alchemist beer on draught. There’s also often some pretty good Coronado beer in cans, too, which is well worth a try.

    The Bottom Line

Is it worth it? Without a doubt. It is my go-to spot when I am craving a thin crust, delicious toppings, and a wonderful cold beer.

What is the ‘must order’ here? Brooklyn. There’s a reason I have ordered it each time I have been here. The simplicty of the ingredients allows the dish to speak for itself. It’s super reasonably priced for the amount of flavour that it delivers.

What other pizza recommendations do you have? Pizzaround and Farina are both good alternatives if you’re nearer to them. I have also enjoyed some good food at Zoca, Peppino, and Pizza Rock.

    Where is it?
