Taiwanese Breakfast Essentials

Restaurants, Breakfast, Special / eatingintaipei

Breakfast is hailed as the most important meal of the day, so why take it lightly? I say, hit it head on and take it as a good chance to eat lots, as you’re going to burn it off throughout the day, anyway (hopefully).

Stinky tofu often divides people, both in taste an Stinky tofu often divides people, both in taste and in public settings.

My first experience was at the Shida Night Market in 2013. I remember wandering through the bustling alleyways of the night market, completely captivated by the strange and wonderful stalls that lined the streets.

As I walked along, I suddenly caught a whiff of a stench that I initially thought was coming from a garbage truck. My curiosity got the better of me, though, and I decided to investigate. I followed the smell to a small street vendor who was deep-frying something that smelled quite unpleasant. Despite the odour, I couldn't resist the temptation to try it.

I disliked it. In fact, I think I finished half a cube of that crispy, rancid-smelling tofu that night, and threw the rest away.

As the years went by, I continued to try it at the behest of friends and family and ended up enjoying the taste. I still struggle with the steamed kind, and sometimes the stinky tofu pictured can have a much stronger smell than the deep-fried one, but I'll always try it out.

My question to you is - To stinky tofu, or not to stinky tofu?

There's nothing I take pleasure in more on a hot afternoon than sinking my chops into a big bowl of shaved ice.

When it's liberally doused in matcha tea, encasing matcha tea jelly, red beans, accompanied by glutinous rice balls, and finally topped with a flametorched creme brulee, there's nothing much else I can say.
