Salt Lick

Salt Lick

When thinking about visiting Hualien, Salt Lick is the first place that goes on my list (closely followed by Taroko, but I can’t eat Taroko…)

Inside Salt Lick, there’s a comfortable atmosphere, and American memorabilia everywhere.

There’s a fairly big outside area, too.

Definitely fulfilling that relaxed BBQ feel.

Here is the BBQ at Salt Lick. I was fortunate enough to catch Ben opening it up, the pics from inside are below.

Some smashing racks right there!

Something I have never known anyone to collect before – barbed wire. The reason? Look below…

No.1 recommended is the ribs, I came here with nothing else on my mind, anyway!

The menu is extensive at Salt Lick! Really, I feel like they could cut the menu down a bit and specialise in just a few dishes. However, I feel like that of a lot of restaurants that do this.

It’s good to see some delicious beer on the menu. I especially enjoy the Tuatara beers from New Zealand.

Great spread!

Look at those fries!!! They were deliciously crunchy and just awesome. Some of the best fries I have had, in all honesty.

These onion rings were delicious at Salt Lick, too!

But, let’s look at the burger – solid pulled pork with a delicious BBQ sauce and smokey flavour. The slaw on the burger cuts through any grease/fat, and adds lots of flavour, too.

Beef brisket sandwich

Drowned in honey it doesn’t photograph well, as you can’t see the delicious brisket underneath. But, trust me, it is there in abundance! Accompanied by a pretty good potato salad, this is also a very solid dish.

Chicago smoked sausage sandwich

Certainly, a way to get your pepper fix in. Again, the fries are awesome and definitely the best side, in my book.

The sausage itself was smoked quite heavily and has a deliciously smokey flavour. With the sweet onions and peppers, it combines to make a great sandwich.

Full rack of ribs

A reason for visiting Hualien from Taipei if ever there was one. The full rack of ribs is faultless.

How do they do it? The end is just as beautifully cooked as the middle – oozing with flavour and so succulent. Really, I have nothing bad to say about these.

DSC00669

Just check out the meat on that bad boy – so good!

Really, Salt Lick is a great reason to visit Hualien, as if you ever needed one. The pace of life is so much slower than that of Taipei, and a welcoming place to relax for a weekend/long weekend.
