Taipei Restaurant – Sheep and Pony’s Fun Taco Tuesday

Nestled amidst the vibrant streets of Taipei, Sheep and Pony beckons with its unique fusion of flavors and playful ambiance. The restaurant’s name alone evokes curiosity, and upon stepping inside, you’ll be greeted by a warm and inviting atmosphere that feels like a cross between a cozy bistro and a suburban neighborhood eatery.

Sheep and Pony is known primarily for its burger menu. Their juicy burgers are what first alerted me to the restaurant. I had heard that their burgers were made to order, and pink in the middle – just how I like it! But then I saw something else on their Instagram page that piqued my curiosity…

The Taco Tuesday extravaganza that seems to have gripped the world by storm, has also come to Taipei, too. And Sheep and Pony is a space to indulge in an array of tacos filled with a variety of combinations that will surely leave you craving for more.

The ambiance both inside and out reflects a blend of rustic charm and contemporary design, creating a comfortable backdrop for casual gatherings, romantic dinners, or memorable celebrations. Whether you’re looking for a comforting burger done just right, or looking to impress a date with some delicious food in a nice atmosphere, Sheep and Pony has something for everyone.

I really like the feel of the outside of Sheep and Pony. There’s so much greenery and warm lighting that it feels infinitely inviting.

It looks way more like a European bistro than anything else, and I am all here for that.

Taco Tuesday at Sheep and Pony

    sheeppony 3

This is specifically the Taco Tuesday menu here at Sheep and Pony. They only offer this specific all-you-can-eat menu on a Tuesday. It may not be forever, so get it while you can. You’ll pay just over $520 per person, and you can eat between 17:00-22:00. When I say all-you-can-eat, I mean all-you-can-eat! Get your tacos, salad, burgers, fried food, secret menu, and even dessert!

Most all-you-can-eat you have to go around with a plate and add things on by yourself, but not here. It’s all table service here. But, be warned – the tables are pretty small, so don’t order everything at once.

    House Salad

The house salad comes with a nicely refreshing salad dressing that is packed full of ginger. It’s a perfect dish for a refreshing summer Tuesday. There’s plenty of lettuce and some radish up in there, and it sets you up nicely for a heavier meal of sliders, fried things, and tacos to come.

    Sliders

Sheep and Pony do sliders, too!

I said in the introduction that what initially piqued my interest with Sheep and Pony was their burger. After having their burger on a separate occasion before this, I was full of excitement for their sliders, especially when they are included as part of the all-you-can-eat menu here on a Taco Tuesday. Trust me when I say that their burgers are really good!

I had a pretty high expectation for their slider, considering that their burger is so good. But, did it deliver?

The bread was quite good, albeit moderately dry. The salad helped to add a nice freshness. The relish on top of their classic slider was nicely sweet to bring everything together. But what about the burger patty itself?

It was just OK. What I really liked before when I ate the burger here, was that the middle of the burger was pink, juicy, and full of amazing beef flavour. In this slider, I got a good beef flavour, but as you can see in the picture – it was certainly not pink, nor was it particularly juicy. The relish made up for the moderate dryness to a certain extent, but not enough for me to come back for the sliders alone.

You’ll also notice in the picture above that there is a fried fish burger. It’s almost exactly the same as a Fillet-O-Fish in McDonalds. Honestly, I don’t mean that as an insult – I like the Fillet-O-Fish! The fish was crispy, the fillet was crispy on the inside and juicy with a good bit of fish in the middle. The relish on top was fine, but didn’t add nor did it take anything away from the dish.

    Mozzarella Sticks

I was excited for the mozzarella sticks. It has been quite a long time since I have tucked in to some of these cheesy sticks! Crispy on the outside, gooey mozzarella cheese on the inside. It’s everything you want from a mozzarella stick, to be honest.

    Tacos

Alright, now we are on to the reason why you clicked in – you want another option for your Taco Tuesday’s in Taipei. Well, does it fit the bill?

The answer to the question above depends on what you’re looking for. If you want a traditional Mexican experience, then this isn’t the place for you.

If you want something that moderately resembles a taco, then this could be the place for you.

If you want somewhere that is reasonably priced, does fresh food, and you’re not bothered about traditional soft shell taco shells, then this is probably where you want to come.

As you can quite clearly see in the pictures, the taco shell here is a toasted wrap, rather than the traditional soft taco shell that we all know and love. But, is that such a bad thing?

I personally don’t see it as too much of a bad thing. If its soft enough that it wraps around the filling, then that’s kind of all I look for. However, the wraps were toasted too long and tended to just crumble apart. So, the next thing that It’s primarily down to is the filling. That’s what can make or break a good taco, as far as I am concerned. So, what about the fillings here?

The majority of the tacos tasted the same. Why? The dressing and topping was largely so similar that the meat flavour couldn’t really effectively come through. They were fine, just not great. However, the best of the bunch for me were the cod ones. Using a similar style of fish to the one in the slider, the cod sticks were crunchy on the outside and juicy on the inside, and they went down nicely in the soft wrap shell with the dressing. But, again, the dressing was the same as almost all other tacos.

So, how could these be better? In my opinion, tailoring the dressings and toppings to the meat would be where I would start, without even touching the soft shell wrap itself. Chicken, beef, fish, and cheese should all be accompanied by something different. They are complimented by much more than just tomato and onion salad with a fairly non-descript tangy sauce.

    The bottom line

Is it worth it? It depends on what you’re looking for. If you want a traditional Taco Tuesday experience, then no. But if you want all-you-can-eat food at a really reasonable price in a great location, then this could be just right for you.

What do I recommend the most? The fish burger, probably.

Would I come here again? Yes, I would, but probably not for Taco Tuesday. I would come here to eat the juicy burger that I had the first time I came.

    Where is it?
