Table of Contents
Nestled in Tianmu sits the great Supranormal Bakery Cafe. They’re definitely going for a laid-back casual vibe with the outside of this restaurant. The corrugated black sheet metal on top of the wood with the inset front of the restaurant gives it a classy, yet humble feel.
Inside Supranormal Bakery Café
What you’re looking at here is my one true weakness. I have said time and time again how much I love braised pork over rice and I will continue to shout about that. But pastry, bread, and coffee. That is my dream triple-team right there. The smell of butter wafting through the air mixed with that unmistakable bitter smell of coffee as the whizz of the grinder and the mill of people bustling around fills the air. Honestly, there’s not much better for a lazy weekend breakfast or brunch, in my opinion.
The mushroom Danish caught me off-guard. Have mushroom Danish pastries always been in this world, or am I seeing something new for the first time? When I look for pastries and I look for a Danish, I will inevitably fall on the raisin version of a Danish pastry, not a savoury one. Now a Pain Au Raisin most similarly resembles a Danish pastry for me. I may have simultaneously offended both the Danes and the French by saying that, but you win some, you lose some… Something like this from Cedric Grolet is what I think about:
Maybe I have been missing something all of my life, though? I digress, mushroom Danish is there right in front of you when you look through the pastry glass cabinet. But what really caught my hungry eye was the amazing-looking cinnamon roll, pain au chocolat, and croissant. I was already planning my afternoon tea.
The Menu
The menu is definitely nice to read. It’s great to see a place do a big breakfast, as well as have options like smoked salmon and avocado, or a breakfast burger. But I came for one thing, and one thing only – the Aussie Style Big Brekkie. Being an Englander through and through, I have had my fair share of Full English Breakfasts, which don’t differ too greatly from what an Aussie Breakfast is, in reality. Usually in a Full English Breakfast, you’ll likely find bacon, sausages, eggs, baked beans, mushrooms, and maybe some hash browns with toast.
But when I look at this Aussie Style Big Brekkie I am infinitely more interested in the fact that there is a cherry tomato confit, mixed lettuce salad, and a mini croissant. I would gladly sub out the salt overload of bacon and sausages in favour of a mini croissant and cherry tomato confit. Some things I want for breakfast and a pastry such as a croissant is definitely high on that list.
What We Ordered
Aussie Style Big Brekkie – Maple Bacon
I don’t feel like there are much better sights for breakfast than something like this. That delicious-looking swirl of egg, those glistening tomatoes (that were warm, by the way), that fragrant bacon, and that crispy-looking croissant that oozed buttery smells into the air…
You’ll see that we opted for 2 of the Aussie Style Big Brekkies from Supranormal Bakery Cafe, mainly to taste both the maple bacon and the halloumi. This one was the maple bacon.
I have never had a breakfast like this. Never have I had bacon, egg, and beans with a croissant all on the same plate! The egg was delicious. I am willing to bet that at least 3 eggs were scrambled, then twisted and turned to perfection slowly and carefully in the pan. The mushrooms were absolutely mega, too, having clearly been sauteed in butter with some herbs. They were so juicy and full of flavour.
As for the bacon, if you have come here looking for crispy bacon because you’re craving it so much, then you may have come to the right place. Salty, maple syrup-flavoured bacon is here, and it’s waiting for you. Is it the crispiest bacon you have ever had? Probably not. But, it’s damned tasty! I’ll talk about the croissant, Rosti, and beans in the picture below.
Aussie Style Big Brekkie – Halloumi Cheese
Halloumi is not particularly something that I am overly keen on. Why? The rubbery texture and the squeak as you bite down on it. In my opinion, Halloumi is overrated. It doesn’t have much of a flavour, but seems to be there primarily for texture. I am OK with that, really, as a lot of Taiwanese stuff does that, too. Think about your chewy boba in that bubble milk tea. Or that mochi that is wrapped around peanut powder. You can’t honestly say that they have an individually discernable flavour, but they do add a texture that is really pretty great.
The Halloumi was good, but I wouldn’t come here just to order it. On its own, the potato Rosti was a little bit greasy, in all honesty, but it went well when paired with the eggs, so I wasn’t about to complain. The beans were pretty good, but they aren’t for everyone. Coming from England, beans on toast was a relatively regular lunch or dinner for me growing up. So I do miss them from time to time. But, after this small pot of beans, I feel like I have had my fill for quite a period of time. But let’s take a moment to talk about this croissant.
What I am looking for in a croissant is a crisp, flakey pastry on the outside, that gives way to airy and buttery-fragrant layers of pastry on the inside. It delivers on all of that! To call this croissant ‘Mini’ is under-selling it, as I don’t think it was mini at all. This is the kind of croissant that you would expect to pay around $90 for in any self-respecting bakery that sells croissants in Taipei. But here they just slap it on your breakfast, and I am absolutely here for that. I loved it.
The Pastries
We had to take pastries home for afternoon tea because that is just the kind of person I am. Here is the cinnamon roll, and how good does it look on the inside with all of those layers? If you’re here for a light and fluffy cinnamon roll with cream cheese on top, then you have probably come to the wrong place – see my post on Cinnamon Rolls below.

However, if you are here for a slap in the face by a brown sugar and cinnamon roll that has decadent layer upon decadent layer of richness and crunchy yet airy goodness, then you are in the right place for that. This was seriously good washed down with a coffee at home!
The Pain Au Chocolat was similarly impressive!
I wanted a croissant when I first went into Supranormal Bakery Cafe, but after having it on the Aussie Big Brekkie, I felt like I should go for this amazing-looking Pain Au Chocolat instead. Did I regret my choice? Absolutely not! The croissant was great, and the Pain Au Chocolat was similarly delicious! The layer upon layer of pastry was impressive, and I stuck it back in our oven to crisp it up and warm it at home again so that it maintained that crunchy crispiness. The chocolate is dark, bitter, and matches the buttery-rich pastry perfectly. Get this.
The Bottom Line
Is it worth it? Supranormal Bakery Cafe should be on your top breakfast or brunch places in Taipei. It's excellent value for money, and delicious through and through.
What was the best dish? The Aussie Big Brekkie with the maple bacon was probably the best. Everything just worked really well.
