The Food Truck
We stumbled across their food truck a few years ago now on a riverside cycle up to Tamsui (note to self, don’t do that on a Youbike in summer, again. Saddle sores are real, people!). At that time we smashed one of their chocolate slushy shakes and a burger, and it went down a real treat! This time, though, we were wandering around the ever people Maji Square (outside Yuanshan MRT station) at the weekend, and stumbled across their recently refurbished food truck. We couldn’t resist.
The Menu at Choco Bear
It’s kind of hard to read like this, but here is what they have:
- Special pork with cheese
- 巧克堡招牌豬 qiǎo kè bǎo zhāo pái zhū
- Beef with peanut butter sauce
- 巧克堡花生牛 qiǎo kè bǎo huā shēng niú
- Spicy chicken
- 川味辣G chuān wèi là G
- Truffle (beef or pork)
- 松露(牛,豬)sōng lù (niú, zhū)
What we ordered
We had to go for the classic pork burger with cheese and chocolate, and the Beef burger with peanut butter and chocolate. I mean, why the hell not? Anything that has ‘招牌’ (zhāo pái) on it, means that it is the house special that they have become ‘famous’ for. You’ll definitely notice that a shop can be made ‘famous’ for just 1 dish, and churn out portion after portion for hours and hours. A few that immediately come to mind are listed below, and you should definitely save them!
Taipei Restaurant – 大橋頭老牌筒仔米糕 Yummy Steamed Rice Cakes in Daqiaotou
Taipei street food – Lan Family’s GuaBao 藍家割包
Peanut Beef Burger w/ Cheese & Chocolate
花生牛肉w/起司&巧克力 - huā shēng niú ròu w/qǐ sī& qiǎo kè lì
How deliciously decadent does that burger look right there, though? I mean, dripping in peanut butter, chocolate, and cheese. Encased in that chocolate bread bun with a big serving of lettuce sticking out (a nod to some semblance of health), I was salivating (and sweating! I mean, goddamn it's hot out there recently!).
When you chomp down into the burger, you'll see a great smearing of chocolate and peanut butter layered on the top, with the lettuce perfectly cushioning the patty from the bun. This is definitely by design, and gets a big thumbs up by me - the lettuce acts as a barrier between patty and bun, meaning that Choco Bears bun never gets soggy. There's nothing worse than a soggy bun, people!
In terms of flavour, it was really good! I am a big fan of sweet Vs savoury, so this was a natural choice for me. The bun itself was a tad on the dry side, but the cheese, chocolate, and peanut butter allowed it to be softened up a little. The patty is not one of those ultra thick patties that oozes juice as you bite down it, but more so a quick flipped fast food patty that is quite thin. It could have been juicier, but I still liked it a lot.
It's difficult not to compare, so if I choose a restaurant like Butcher by Lanpengyou, their burger is super juicy as it is thicker. Also Mancave in Zhongshan is pretty juicy, too, as they put more ingredients in there to bring about a more juicy feeling. Check out more here...
Pork Burger with Cheese & Chocolate
招牌豬肉w/起司&巧克力 - zhāo pái zhū ròu w/qǐ sī & qiǎo kè lì
More chocolaty goodness coming out of the food truck here. This was their pork burger with cheese and chocolate. Looking just as delicious as its beef brother above, this pork patty is their classic offering. A similar style to the beef bad boy above with the lettuce, patty, and toppings. It was looking goooood.
The same bun is used again here, but it felt like this offering was a little bit more juicy than its beef compatriot above. Popping with that signature chocolate sauce, salad, and patty, as I bit down I could taste each individual layer of the burger. The pork had some good flavour and was seasoned just enough to allow the individual flavours to come through. It was good, and washed down really nicely with a Beer Belly Brewery draft beer right from the tap from their nearby beer truck.
The bottom line
Is it worth it? I think that if you want a fun burger that will fill you up, then this food truck could just be what you're looking for. However, if you're looking for an artisan patty and bun combo, then perhaps look to somewhere like Burger by Lanpengyou, Mancave, or Sheep + Pony. However, from a food truck, I genuinely think that this is a great lunch alternative.
What other food trucks do you recommend? Exit Yuanshan MRT station on a weekend and turn left towards the farmers market that often fills the undercover area. Walk through that farmers market to get to the food trucks at the back. You're not going to go far wrong with many of the offerings here, in all honesty. Food trucks are often limited by nature, but these here do tend to offer up some great food for a reasonable price. There's also regular breweries that turn up such as Beer Belly Brewery, Ugly Half, and 23 Public.
