New Taipei City – ‘Incredible Roast’ 入魂燒味 Cantonese Restaurant-One of Yonghe’s Best Kept Secrets

Incredible Roast is a Cantonese restaurant and is one of those places that when you walk by you can’t help but take a second glance back at. Like many Cantonese chop shops, they offer up that yummy pork done in a few different ways – braised and roasted in a sticky red sauce the cut finely, belly pork cooked until succulent and then roasted on top to give it that incredible crackling of the fat. They also do some tender chicken and wonderfully fatty, flavourful duck.

If you’ve ever been to Yonghe, then chances are that you went to LeHua Night Market. Yes, it’s good, and yes there’s lots to eat, but you’re missing out if that’s the only place you have been. Yonghe has so much to offer, and all within striking distance of LeHua Night Market.

On the same road as LeHua Night Market but on the other side of Yonghe Road on Daxin Street, ‘Incredible Roast’ is the place to go for a more substantial meal rather than Night Market snacks that ultimately amount to a meal. You’re coming here for honest, delicious, and punchy flavours of Cantonese food, done really well.

From the outside, those LED lights and that delicious Cantonese smell pulsating through the air will draw you in.

I tend to inevitably gravitate towards the selection of meat hanging in the windows whenever I see them. While in many Cantonese chop shops, they are on the outer window luring in the passers-by, Incredible Roast has everything hanging inside closer to where the meal prep station is.

Everything looks clean and carefully presented here at Incredible Roast. Oftentimes you’ll see grease-smattered glass and offcuts lying around everywhere, which I don’t really care for, but not here.

So I absolutely had to get the Crispy Skin Duck + Char Su Pork meat special at Incredible Roast. Just like its namesake - the incredible colour on both the duck skin and also on the pork was just way too alluring. It arrived with a little dipping sauce that was lightly sweet and lightly tangy.

The duck was, indeed, crispy-skinned. You know that moment when you bite down on some crispy skin duck and you can clearly identify the crispness of the skin as well as the silky smooth fat that runs underneath that before it gets to the succulent and juicy meat? Yes, all that.

I was very excited about the Char Su Pork. Perhaps that's what led me to feel a little deflated. Maybe my expectation was set a little bit high, and I don't think it quite met what I expected it would. It was juicy, it was tasty, but one thing I personally like about Cantonese food is the strength of flavour. This Char Su Pork didn't quite stack up in that department, in my opinion. However, if you want a subtle flavoured juicy bit of pork, then this is probably a good call for you.

It felt rude to come to Incredible Roast and not try their crispy-skinned belly pork. I mean, how delicious does it look in the pictures above? The amount of crispiness on the top layer of fat is outstanding. It's up there with some of the best-textured belly pork I have ever had. The crispness is just the right level of thickness and is a perfectly crispy texture.

The flavour of the pork is also right on point, without being too heavy or too light. You know exactly what you're eating, and you thank Incredible Roast because of it. This is served up with mustard or salt, but I don't think it needs either of them to still be magical.

    The set

With the set meal, you get vegetables, rice, and a bowl of soup. I'll pass on the soup, but that's nothing personal about Incredible Roast, I more often than not pass on the soup everywhere I go. The vegetables are simply blanched, and then some deep-fried shallot oil is drizzled on top to add a layer of decadent flavour. The bowl of rice is as nice as a good bowl of rice can be.

    The Bottom Line

Is it worth it? If you're in Yonghe and looking for something other than LeHua Night Market, then Incredible Roast is definitely worth a shout.

What is the best dish? That Crispy Skinned Belly Pork is unbeatable. You must get it.
